Devices that combine LED technology with ultraviolet light at 253.7 nm achieve virtually complete disinfection by eliminating 99% of microorganisms in the environment. It is a new way of living in safe social environments.
For a long time, humans have tried to combat numerous pathogens that pose varying degrees of risk to our health. However, it wasn’t until the recent pandemic that we truly realized our vulnerability, prompting us to be more cautious about shared spaces and seek new solutions to this problem.
We decided to go beyond by researching and developing new products not only based on lighting and design. Based on that vision, GERMILED was born, the brand led by García Requejo. With it, we have been able to carry out an extremely important health project, contributing our expertise in lighting and decoration.
The DUO luminaire is a device that integrates LED light with ultraviolet technology to ensure complete disinfection of indoor spaces. Until now, lighting and disinfection systems had to operate separately, but now, thanks to the DUO system, both types of light can converge in a single device.
Ultraviolet light C is one of our greatest allies for sterilizing indoor spaces such as laboratories, hospitals, production rooms, gyms, schools, hotels, and other high-traffic communal areas. It emits a wavelength of 253.7 nm, whose peak coincides with the absorption spectrum of the genetic material bases, DNA and RNA, triggering cell death by inhibiting the replicative process of cells. Therefore, and due to its risks, it is important to use it correctly, always respecting the indicated safety measures.
The DUO-approved lighting and disinfection system is equipped with four 15 W ultraviolet tubes and a central 30 W LED light source, allowing either one to be turned on depending on the selected program. DUO also features a PIR sensor (presence detector) to prevent accidental exposure and is equipped with a remote system for scheduling on/off times. Rigorous studies and microbiological controls have been conducted to ensure optimal working conditions.
In collaboration with the University of Burgos, efficacy was tested with both Gram-positive (+) and Gram-negative (-) bacteria on Agar plates and stainless steel, as well as with fungi. Additionally, in conjunction with the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB), from the biosafety department, virucidal efficacy was also tested on cell cultures through titration assays, achieving a viral reduction of 99.00% in just 10 minutes of exposure at 1 meter away.
GERMILED’s DUO luminaires have been installed in the occupational risk offices of Copredije in Madrid. Prior calculations were made based on the dimensions of each room to ensure optimal irradiance at all points, taking into account shaded areas. After each workday, conventional cleaning is first carried out and reinforced with the (previously scheduled) UV-C light disinfection of the offices. This is how the work environment is fully clean the next day, leading to an improved sense of well-being.
In this project, GERMILED has achieved the perfect fusion between efficient lighting and disinfection and sterilization of indoor spaces that doesn’t generate chemical emissions. With the arrival of winter, bacterial and viral processes tend to increase. For this reason, we are proud of our innovation to create safe living spaces and are delighted to share it with the world.
