Germicidal quartz tube for 254nm ultraviolet -C VS 222nm UVC
In order to reduce viral transmission in the air or on surfaces, UVC radiation has been effectively used in viral inactivation.
Until now, UVC radiation emitted by fluorescent quartz glass is the most commonly used technology, through an ozone filter, it produces a wavelength of 254nm. There is scientific evidence showing that this type of light could efficiently inactivate new viral strains existing in the air and on surfaces. We may apply this 254nm UVC light in spaces where there is no human presence, since the ultraviolet light could cause damage to human beings.
At present, more investigations and tests about the 222nm UVC are conducted in labs. During the pandemic, it maintains its significant property to kill Covid-19. This technology, on the basis of an excilamp, through a low-pass filter, gives off only a band of 222nm wavelength, which proves safe to be deployed in public spaces because studies have shown it would not pose any risks to the human body.
The reason is 222nm UVC has a very limited penetration. Even though, this penetration is still much larger than the size of virus. As such, it is efficient in killing Covid-19. However, 222nm cannot penetrate to human live cells nor human ocular cells, thus it is absolutely safe.
Briefly speaking, UVC 222nm is efficient in fight against Covid-19. However, it is considered as an electromagnetic ultraviolet radiation C. This is the reason why at present, it is not allowed to be used in public space where there is a human presence. Another method to obtain this 222nm wavelength would be by led chips. But the current issue about its low-emission efficacy (Around 3% of its total power), needs to be settled for a widespread deployment.
The other feature that plays against 222nm UVC technology is that its light irradiation is lower in relation to the power supply. Therefore, it doesn’t work so effectively.
We would suggest that you wait a bit while before the technology (UVC 222nm) becomes mature enough and turns out to be more efficient. In this way to ensure a maximum safety. Meanwhile, when choosing UVC 254nm devices, we would strongly recommend you go for those in accordance with UNE0068 standards, among which we highlight the following points:
-Having a timer included
-Having a presence detector integrated
All of our devices relating to ultraviolet radiation C could meet these standards, as you can check on our website https://www.germicidalamp.com/.
Our company is capable of carrying out a personalized study for disinfection in large areas or companies.
We would like to invite you to read our next Newsletter on which we will show you a germicidal lighting source to complement your objectives of sterilization.
